Last week Twitter king Ashton Kutcher posed a challenge to news powerhouse CNN: The first one to reach one million followers wins.
By Thursday night, Ashton hit his mark, and Friday morning, his first stop was with Twitter’s newest tweeter, Oprah Winfrey.
Ashton Kutcher: “I believe that we’re at a place now with social media where one person’s voice can be as powerful as an entire news network or an entire media network.”
Fourteen million people are already answering the question, ‘What are you doing?’ in one hundred forty words or less on Twitter. Friday, Oprah decided to get in the game and start Tweeting…and who better to explain the social media phenomenon than Mr. 1 million followers himself.
Oprah Winfrey: “You no longer have to have rumors about you at all. You can really set the record straight immediately.”
Mark Consuelos: “You can beat the news.”
Oprah: “Yeah, you can beat the news.”
Ashton: “They can say Demi’s pregnant and I can say no.”
Ashton: “Well, I don’t think the tide has completely turned yet. But the difference is that if there is some type of fallacy that’s out in some magazine or that some blogger has written about you, you can actually respond to it and you can respond to it in a genuine way directly with your fans as opposed to having to go through the whole rigamarole of publicists and this and that and the other thing.”
Ashton may not have too much to brag about for too long. The queen of talk is already gaining on him. By the end of her live broadcast on Friday -- which ended at 11 am eastern time -- Oprah had already racked up 87,070 followers. Now that’s power!
