Brokeback Mountain, the movie headlined by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, will hit the stage, complete with a song list.
The New York City Opera will compose an opera based on the hit 2005 movie. The original short story was written by Annie Proulx and the movie earned three Academy Awards. The opera has asked Charles Wuorinen to compose the anticipated project.
The opera is scheduled to premiere in spring 2013, City Opera said Sunday.
“Ever since encountering Annie Proulx’s extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so,” Wuorinen said in a statement.
Brokeback Mountain is a love story about two cowboys who start a homosexual affair when they meet on the fictional mountain in 1963.
A rep for Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams, who was also in the movie, tells CelebTV.com they know very little about the upcoming production.
For their part, fans can’t seem to quit the engrossing love story.
