It was a big night for silent films at the 84th Annual Academy Awards!
The foreign flick The Artist walked away with 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Michel Hazanavicius, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design! The French gem is the first silent film to win Best Picture since 1929.
Other big winners included Meryl Streep who won Best Actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. Although Streep has been nominated 17 times, this is only her third win and the first for the actress since 1983 for her role in Sophie’s Choice.
82-year-old Christopher Plummer won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the indie movie Beginners, in which he played a man who comes out of the closet at 75. Octavia Spencer nabbed the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as a 1960′s maid in The Help.
The Best Original Screenplay award went to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris and Alexander Payne, Jim Rash and Nat Faxon beat out their competitors for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants.
