The 82nd annual Academy Awards kicked off to a predictable beginning as Inglorious Basterds’ Christoph Waltz took home the award for Best Supporting Actor.

The Austrian-native snagged the Oscar for his portrayal of Col. Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Nazi war-flick, a Best Picture nominee.

Waltz acknowledged the Academy saying, “your welcoming embrace, and there’s no way I can ever thank you enough, but I can start right now. Thank you.”

Disney’s animated movie, Up, the obvious front-runner, was another early winner, taking home the award for Best Animated Feature. The film is also nominated for Best Picture.

As the evening continued with jokes from hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, expected winner, Precious’ Mo’Nique, beat out stars like Anna Kendrick and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actress.
