“America’s Next Top Model” Welcomes Transgender Contestant

August 14, 2008

Tyra Banks continues to break the mold with her TV reality show.

America’s Next Top Model will welcome a transgender contestant on the new season, which premieres Sept. 3 on The CW.

“My cards were dealt differently,” Isis, a 22-year-old former receptionist, told Us magazine.

The wannabe supermodel says she is “a woman born physically male.”

For her part, Tyra Banks is being celebrated for recognizing this fact. GLAAD president Neil Giuliano said that this is “an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television.”

Added Giuliano: “We applaud Tyra Banks and The CW for making this historic visibility of transgender people possible.”

That’s all well and good for Isis, but the leggy beauty plans to look out for her own interests first and foremost.

“I like to help people, but I’m here to follow my dreams,” she told the magazine.
