Avril Lavigne Not Welcome in Malaysia?
August 18, 2008
Avril Lavigne might have to skip a few spots on her upcoming concert tour of Asia.
Some people in Malaysia think it’s a bad idea to let the pop star perform in front of their youth.
“It is considered too sexy for us,” explains Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a representative of the country’s Pan-Malaysian Islamic party. “It’s not good for viewers in Malaysia… We don’t want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models.’
Avril was scheduled to play Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 29, but that date could now be in jeopardy.
An official from the Culture Ministry’s department said the government has not given permission for the concert yet. The department is to meet Tuesday to make a decision.
Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from chest to knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.
A spokesman for the concert’s organizer insists Lavigne’s show has no “negative elements.”
