BECKHAM SIDELINED FOR SIX WEEKS
August 30, 2007 Bad news for David Beckham: after spraining his ankle in a match Wednesday, the L.A. Galaxy star will be sidelined for six weeks.
The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed Thursday he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee, the team said in a statement.
On top of injuring his knee this week, Beckham, 32, has been dogged by a nagging ankle injury since starting his Galaxy career.
"It's just gone from one thing to another thing. Maybe it is a sign to give it a rest, get it right and not come back until it is right," Beckham told reporters after the game, which Galaxy lost on penalties.
A Galaxy spokesman said Beckham sprained his right knee during the Wednesday match, the final of a competition involving eight teams, four from the U.S. and four from Mexico. Beckham fell badly and limped off the field, then watched the rest of the game from the bench.
Beckham, whose five-year contract guarantees an annual salary of $6.5 million, could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy's season because of a sprained right knee. He's played 310 minutes in six games, which comes to about $21,000 a minute if he's out for the season.
