Chris Brown was a no show at Sunday night’s BET awards, but the R&B star wasn’t always supposed to be removed from the guest list.
Brown, currently on probation for beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna, was scheduled to perform at the awards, but after it became clear the night would focus on honoring Michael Jackson, producers pulled his act from the lineup.
Several insiders tell the New York Daily News that including Brown in the night’s lineup seemed inappropriate with all the negative publicity he has been facing, and his removal came at the insistance of Rev. Al Sharpton.
“Al made such a fuss to the BET executives that they pulled Chris,” the source said, adding that Jay-Z also put in his two cents on the matter.
“Jay is a big name in the BET community, and he was very vocal about his displeasure with Chris attending the ceremony. He didn’t want Chris anywhere near the awards so close to the court’s ruling.”
Brown isn’t taking the dis so well either. “He’s furious,” a friend of the singer tells the Daily News. “BET asked him to perform and waited until the last minute to tell him it was off. He’s pretty shocked and outraged right now.”
Reps for both Brown and BET are claiming he was never confirmed for the show.
