Former American Idol contestant Clay Aiken admits that early on, he only told one person he’s gay.
“I told [fellow American Idol contestant] Kimberley Locke—only person I’ve ever told, first person I’ve ever told,” Aiken said Thursday on Good Morning America.
The two singers were in the top 3 on the second season of Idol. The good friends even went on to live together after the show ended.
Aiken said that Locke never told anybody he’s gay, and added with a laugh, “I hope she still ain’t told nobody.”
Aiken insists he was not keeping his sexuality a secret. “I don’t think I admitted to anyone outside myself ‘til I was on Idol. I grew up never caring what people thought of me, I got picked on for everything,” he said.
Telling his mom was not as easy for Aiken, though. He told the morning show, “I told my mom the day my brother left for Iraq, I figured, ‘well, it’s a bad day already, might as well not spread it out.’ So she had a very bad weekend.”
But the hardest person to reveal the news to was his marine brother. “It was probably harder for me to tell my younger brother. I cried and cried. But then he said, OK, is that it?” Aiken said.
The former Idol contestant became a father seven weeks ago with his best friend Jaymes Foster.
Foster told People magazine, “Clay’s a natural and he’s really, really good with [getting the baby to go to sleep]. On a larger scale, he’s the perfect person. He’s been a school teacher, we have the same morals, family is very important to him and Parker means everything to us.”
