It’s an Idol bombshell! Ellen DeGeneres is taking over Paula Abdul’s seat on the Idol bench.
American Idol may have just gotten a whole lot funnier with the addition of their fourth judge—Ellen DeGeneres! Fox announced the news saying Ellen would join Simon Randy and Kara at the judges table this season, after the audition rounds.
At a taping for her talk show Wednesday the funny lady told her audience what a huge fan she is of Idol and how excited she is about her new gig. She said, "I'm going to have a day job and a night job.”
Simon Fuller, the exec producer and creator of the show released a statement saying
Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel."
Awesome! I don’t watch her show but I’ve seen some clips that were pretty funny. I think she’ll do great. The other three will cover the technical musical stuff while Ellen will dish out the laughs and humanizing touch, as they mentioned.
this coming from a guy who doesn’t have his own show, is not part of any entertainment business for many years, doesn’t have a fanbase of millions, and spends his time on youtube…not that there’s anything wrong with that, tonyreno123, just saying
Don’t get me wrong, I love Ellen, and think she’s hilarious and completely down to earth…but I have to wonder what is she going to bring to the show? I don’t think she has any background in music.
When I first heard about this on the View, I thought you have got to be kidding me! We don’t need a comedian, we need someone with musical abilities and talent. Ellen can neither dance nor sing. Ellen is a good comedian. But I think American Idol has sunk to a new low.
I am sorta tired of hearing them criticize them, cause it makes the singers feel bad, it will be nice for the singers to laugh a little int heir dark time.
I think Ellen is funny. But this show is not about comedy, although it has some very comedic moments. It’s supposed to be about musical ability. When you put someone on who knows absolutely nothing about the industry and has no real musical ability, it kind of discredits the show itself. I see Ellen DeGeneres enough on TV. Had they chosen another musical celebrity that was popular I would have been okay with that.
No doubt Ellen is funny. Yeah its a music show, you don’t need comedy. But it honestly would have more eye opening moments. Although she has no musical ability, she can add something that none of them have. Which is sincerity. Im counting on her charisma to carry hr judging abilities. But i think she will have some comments. I don’t think she will be all “that was good”
No doubt she will add levity. But how can you judge someone’s musical attributes without having the exposure to it. Randy, Simon, and Paula have all worked in the music industry as performers, producers, writers. They know what it takes and what the industry is looking for right now. That’s the same as having someone judge a cooking show without knowledge of different cuisines or cooking techniques. It won’t be the same anyway. The talent on that show hasn’t been good since the first 3 or 4 yrs.
I am thrilled. She’s perfect for the job, despite her lack of a musical background. She’s brilliantly people smart. She will do well and of course will be hilarious.
she’ll be a really good judge. she’ll be able to look at the singers from an audience members perspective and i think that’s what the judging panel needs
I haven’t heard anyone (except the reatrd who posted just before you) say anything about her being gay. I love Ellen, but I have a hard time picturing her as a judge of vocal talent. She could be great at it though; it’s just not a side of her we’ve seen before, so it’s hard to imagine.
i will not be watching this show ever again. i know just one person will not make a dent in this talented show. so sorry you had to cheapen such a great show. she or he is nothing compared to paula who brought class and compasion to this wonderful entertaining tv program. i will miss watching the show miss seeing simon and randy someone always has to mess up a good thing but this is uncalled for.
Paula wasnt replaced guys she quit. So they found a replacement but i thought thats why they added the new girl last year. Man they need to just stick with the three they got.. no one wants ellen there i mean not cus shes gay but she just doesnt fit in and it sounds like its gunna be vry annoying seeing her on there every week…
What does Ellen know about music? She like many others have a love for music, but does not know music at all. Ask her what a triad is and she couldn’t tell you. This is someone thats going to determine someones fate. Very poor choice…no seasoning here. Latoya Jackson, Celine Dion and many others like them are not currently working, and Simon picks Ellen. He must be working on the cheap these days…you get what you pay for.
Meredith . . . there is no British Idol, but there is a show called X Factor (Leona Lewis is a past winner) which is currently airing the audition phase right now. It’s set up differently than AI in that the judges act as mentors for 4 categories. It’s very, very good. You can get the best auditions on YouTube. Hope this helps.
I won’t miss Abdul. I couldn’t tolerate another season of her psycho babbling. And besides, the show is about finding talent, not about Abdul. Personally, I think Abdul is nuts for demanding more money and then quiting when she doesn’t get it. Abdul is only a mediocre talent at best, she is never going to earn what she made on the talent show, like what was it about 10 or 12 million for just sitting there?
Thats not what I meant. I know all about the X factor, I watch it every week, love the show. I meant when is the actual American Idol due to broadcast in the uk. We get that on our tv every year too, but Ive never really paid too much attention as to when its on
