Cancer survivor Patrick Swayze celebrated a happy birthday Monday on the set of his new A&E series, The Beast.
The Dirty Dancing star, along with wife Lisa Niemi, marked his 56th birthday in Chicago, along with fans who turned out to wish him well, as first reported by TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking.com.
The star—who revealed in March that he is suffering from pancreatic cancer—filmed scenes all day at Millennium Park in 80-degree heat, starting at dawn.
What’s more, Swayze chose to do his own stunts. In one scene, he leaped over a 10-ft. high stone fence then sprinted 50 yards through the park.
“I can’t believe the stamina he has,” one eyewitness said, according to the website. “He looked like he was training for the Olympics!”
Around noon, the actor and his wife broke for lunch in his trailer, which the crew had decked out with birthday signs. Swayze dug into his birthday cake then doled out hugs and autographs to fans.
When Swayze got back to the set, he got a nice surprise from the crew: They were all sporting shirts that read “Crazy for Swayze” and sang “Happy Birthday” when he stepped out of his SUV.
“It was a very touching moment for everyone,” a source on the set told TheseBootsAreMadeForStalking.com.
“Patrick was filled with joy and smiles. You can tell that he is loving life and so happy to be alive.”
