Sheryl Crow: I Want to Take Britney Spears to Nashville

Sheryl Crow has survived her own troubled times, from suicide to breakups to cancer, and perhaps that’s why she feels she can help Britney Spears.

“There have been so many times where I’ve thought about calling her [Britney Spears] so I can step in and actually try to help her,” Crow told the U.K.’s Daily Mail in a recent interview.

“Someone needs to let her step back. I want to take her to Nashville, away from the madness of LA, hang out with the people and the horses and just start trying to fix her. That girl needs a friend. Someone needs to save her life.”

Crow admits she’s seen her own dark days.

“I suffer from depression, and at its worst there was a six-month period in my twenties when I couldn’t dress, days when I couldn’t leave the house. Antidepressants helped and so did therapy, but depression is a chemical thing that some people go through. It’s always been part of my life,” said Crow.

The 46-year-old rocker also admits she’s no stranger to excess. “Partying is part of rock ‘n’ roll. Think about it—it just makes sense. Going out on stage can be a totally terrifying experience. I felt that I couldn’t perform without Jack Daniel’s, and then afterwards I felt I couldn’t go home without him. I did a lot of drinking early on because it helped me cope with what was happening,” she told the paper.

Two years ago, her engagement to Lance Armstrong ended and Crow, then 44, was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I guess things went from bad to worse but the only option is to get through it,” she said.

“When I was lying on a radiation table after I found out that I had cancer, my only thought was, ‘I am the only person who can take care of myself.’ So that’s what I did.”

Crow reassessed her life after the diagnosis.

“If I was angry or sad, I would let myself cry. I spent days crying. I allowed myself to open up,” Crow said.

Crow now lives outside Nashville with her adopted son, Wyatt. She’s currently in London and set to perform there on June 28. Her new album Detours is now available in stores.
