Joaquin Phoenix has acted anything but sane recently.
From performing a rap routine on a Vegas stage, to doing an extremely bizarre interview with David Letterman, the actor’s recent unusual demeanor has been all the buzz–even making its way into a spoof at the Oscars.
For one Chicago-based psychiatrist, Paul Dobransky, mental illness is to blame.
In an intereview with the Los Angeles Times, Dobransky says Joaquin’s “socially inappropriate” behavior is actually reflective of symptoms of schizophrenia.
“Phoenix’s appearance as well as his career change, poor hygiene and grooming, vocal tics (such as muttering) and lack of facial emotion are classic symptoms of mental illness,” Dobransky told the paper.
He added that Phoenix’s new trademark of sunglasses could be suggestive of paranoia,”There is something wrong. And it’s beyond drug abuse.”
As for the rumors that Joaquin is putting on an act for a career boost, Dobransky says,”Whatever it is, it’s not funny — whether it’s drug abuse, mental illness coming on or the clumsiest attempt ever at a career change.”
A rep for the actor is firing back at Dobransky, telling MTV News: “How absolutely inappropriate for a doctor who has no personal interaction or relationship with someone to diagnose them.”
