Madonna’s ongoing battle to adopt 3-year-old Mercy James from Malawi is heating up.
The singer has already appealed a judge’s rejection of her request to adopt the little girl — who reportedly already calls the pop star “Mummy” — and now the Malawi Human Rights Commission has taken up Madge’s cause.
Madonna’s lawyer, Alan Chinula, say the judge’s ruling “was quite a surprise and the Malawi Human Rights Commission’s [investigation] confirms this,” People reports.
“We believe the honorable judge erred in her ruling because we believe the rights of the child were not fully considered.”
Rep for the Commission, Grace Malera, adds that through their investigation it will be determined if Mercy is better off living under the care of the orphanage or with Madonna.
“We want to make sure that the rights of the child are fully protected,” Malera said.
While Madonna’s appeal is expected to be heard in the next few weeks, little Mercy is waiting patiently under the care of Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity.
A source tells People that Mercy “understands what’s going on,” adding, “Mercy shouted ‘Mummy’ when she first saw Madonna and has been asking, ‘Where is Mummy? Where is Lola?’”
The Material Girl is currently spending time in London, while her children Rocco, and David are spending time with their father, Guy Ritchie.
