The Yanks take the award show too seriously and sucking up to one another, Ricky played it as it should be just a good laugh for people who are just entertainers after all and if they can’t laugh at themselves we certainly can the pretentious lot should be grateful for the life they lead.
Ok since you both asked, in my experience, not many people here even know about the UK “Office”, & few of those that do prefer it, or even appreciate it. “Extras” ran on HBO, & they even localized some of the jokes, but sadly it too seems little known. His latest standup also ran on HBO, but I don’t know how it was received.
I don’t know how well “Ghost Town” or TIOL did, but it’s safe to say they weren’t blockbusters.

What’s often overlooked when regarding Ricky’s popularity worldwide is his Podcasts. The most downloaded of all time by miles, they are responsible for a massive percentage of his following yet surprising amounts of his “TV fans” don;t know his internet work even exists.
Fact is, he’s getting jobs like the Golden Globes because he is (rightfully) a star in the acting/hollywood etc community.

Ricky Gervais is VERY Famous in here or they wouldn’t have asked him to host the Golden Globes I’ve known who he is since 2000/2001ish whenever the first series of ‘The Office’ came out on DVD. As soon as I watched it… I knew if he came over here he was going straight to the top of the A List of celebrities. And I was right. He was HILARIOUS last night! Everybody is talking about how funny he was today!
He did – I noticed that too when they were showing the commericals advertising that he was hosting the Golden Globes. I was shocked. I was like “Wow, he lost a lot of weight”.
I’m sorry, but I disagree with you. Ricky Gervais is considered VERY famous here in the States. I happened to work on Ghost Town, and it did ok at the box office. Most films have a short shelf-life in theatres these days because everyone waits for everything to come out on DVD. Usually Americans only go to the movies for something like “Avatar” or something their home theatre system can’t handle. Maybe ppl in Iowa don’t know him as well, but New York’ers know him VERY well!
Could it also be that everyone was on pins and needles waiting to see if they or their friend/family was going to win or not. People are always very stiff at these ego competitions. Especially at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Also, they have to stay sober until after the ceremony (Unless you’re Mariah Carey)

Who said he bombed? I’ve been hearing the complete opposite all day. TMZ, Extra, Access Hollywood and E! have all said he was refreshing and extremely funny. Everyone loved how he was teasing.

Ricky’s a man of the people with one of the keenest observational comedy styles of his generation. I’ve always found his work interesting and funny. The timing and delivery of the MG joke was immense.

Have you ever even been to another country? I know a lot of Americans and they honestly can’t take a joke most of the time. Americans are the easiest nation to offend and hardest to explain something too.

Yes i have. When i was in my senior year of high school we went traveling through Central Europe (where my family are descended from btw) Some high schools in the US did this, not sure about nowadays though. And the American’s you met do not represent me or the 300+ million people in America.

It’s a continet behaving like an island, but there are plenty of Americans who are little or no different to Europeans – the more intelligent ones.
The US is such a big, diverse country that some Americans don’t feel the need to travel outside America since they can just go to another state for a vacation. Every state in the US is drastically different than the last. They’re kind of like mini countries except the nationality stays the same.
I do agree though, more Americans need to get out and see the world from their own eyes instead of on a TV or a computer screen, but i think that goes for everyone, not just Americans.
The cultures in the US (like the South, the Northeast, the Midwest) are really developed, with quite some history and different ethnic compositions. It’s really a credit to the inclusivity of the culture that they can keep it together – I find that astonishing about the US and it may be why they need a more defined culture than elsewhere as they have so many different people to unite there. They are only comparable to Russia, India or China in that sense.
Maybe the American culture has worked so hard for so long keeping together 52 states with often very different subcultures that they just don’t have the energy for the rest of the world. It’s not like they have a long history like in Europe where countries have less diversity and more history to unite them. There was a European Civil War from 1914-1945 (with a long armistice) but the last English, French or German Civil War was several centuries before the mid 1800s.

The Yanks take the award show too seriously and sucking up to one another, Ricky played it as it should be just a good laugh for people who are just entertainers after all and if they can’t laugh at themselves we certainly can the pretentious lot should be grateful for the life they lead.

Ok since you both asked, in my experience, not many people here even know about the UK “Office”, & few of those that do prefer it, or even appreciate it. “Extras” ran on HBO, & they even localized some of the jokes, but sadly it too seems little known. His latest standup also ran on HBO, but I don’t know how it was received.
I don’t know how well “Ghost Town” or TIOL did, but it’s safe to say they weren’t blockbusters.
Something’s getting him some exposure, though.

What’s often overlooked when regarding Ricky’s popularity worldwide is his Podcasts. The most downloaded of all time by miles, they are responsible for a massive percentage of his following yet surprising amounts of his “TV fans” don;t know his internet work even exists.
Fact is, he’s getting jobs like the Golden Globes because he is (rightfully) a star in the acting/hollywood etc community.

I’m sorry, but I disagree with you. Ricky Gervais is considered VERY famous here in the States. I happened to work on Ghost Town, and it did ok at the box office. Most films have a short shelf-life in theatres these days because everyone waits for everything to come out on DVD. Usually Americans only go to the movies for something like “Avatar” or something their home theatre system can’t handle. Maybe ppl in Iowa don’t know him as well, but New York’ers know him VERY well!

Could it also be that everyone was on pins and needles waiting to see if they or their friend/family was going to win or not. People are always very stiff at these ego competitions. Especially at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Also, they have to stay sober until after the ceremony (Unless you’re Mariah Carey)

Ricky Gervais was awesome! Love his wit and humor. I wished he had more screen time (probably couldn’t so they could keep the show ending on time). Looks like everyone in the audience had a good laugh. Loved how he wasn’t afraid to offend anyone at their expense. He was an equal opportunity offender. Ricky, you’re my hero!

Ricky’s a man of the people with one of the keenest observational comedy styles of his generation. I’ve always found his work interesting and funny. The timing and delivery of the MG joke was immense.
Comedy is comedy … it transcends nationality. I don’t judge performers on where they were born.

The US is such a big, diverse country that some Americans don’t feel the need to travel outside America since they can just go to another state for a vacation. Every state in the US is drastically different than the last. They’re kind of like mini countries except the nationality stays the same.
I do agree though, more Americans need to get out and see the world from their own eyes instead of on a TV or a computer screen, but i think that goes for everyone, not just Americans.

The cultures in the US (like the South, the Northeast, the Midwest) are really developed, with quite some history and different ethnic compositions. It’s really a credit to the inclusivity of the culture that they can keep it together – I find that astonishing about the US and it may be why they need a more defined culture than elsewhere as they have so many different people to unite there. They are only comparable to Russia, India or China in that sense.

Maybe the American culture has worked so hard for so long keeping together 52 states with often very different subcultures that they just don’t have the energy for the rest of the world. It’s not like they have a long history like in Europe where countries have less diversity and more history to unite them. There was a European Civil War from 1914-1945 (with a long armistice) but the last English, French or German Civil War was several centuries before the mid 1800s.

I think it’s fair to say that certain types of humour are more typical to and therefore more appreciated by some countries or regions within than others.
Here’s an example, whether you enjoy his comedy or not (because this is of course a generalisation, not everyone will fit the mould) you can surely see that comedian Jack Dee wouldn’t be a bit in America. His miserably, moany, self deprecating humour is so English it ain’t funny (SWIDT?)
I think the cultural element is significant.

I think Jack Dee is good comedy, and you agree that he’ll find more people who dig his style in the UK than in the ‘States. We both think Ricky Gervais is good comedy, and it seems to me that it’s been made pretty clear that he generally gets a better response from us than he does Americans
There is such thing as English humour, Northern humour, and so on. Doesn’t guarantee that others won’t like it, just that overall fewer will prefer it if its alien to them.

the cultural exchange really is very onsided towards the U.S. Infact theres so much u.s stuff in the uk most people dont even notice. just mention any area of human interest and you could probably name many u.s brands associated with it. Ask an americanthe opposite question and you wouldn’t get a similar answer. There are notable exceptions of course – like sport.

In fact Americans forget that the English empire was the largest in history and the USA is an offshoot.

I think the original point svd205 made was completly wrong for this reason.put the shoe on the other foot. Americans have a lot of pizzerias that serve pizza\pasta. And you don’t get many Italians saying that American is “Italianised” and that Americans swallow Italian culture. As you said culture is not simply a couple of restaurants or kids that wear caps and jeans. Each country is different. This is evident as soon as someone steps off a plane, but not to people behind a computer screen!
