The woman at the center of the extortion plot against David Letterman has been revealed as former Late Show assistant, Stephanie Birkitt.
Letterman fans may remember the 34-year-old blonde as the show’s slouchy assitant who often appeared on-cam to hand out prizes to audience members.
Until recently, Birkitt reportedly lived with Robert “Joe” Halderman, the man who attempted to extort $2 million from Letterman, in exchange for a package of embarassing information–including evidence that the Late Show host had slept with Birkitt, his employee at the time.
According to a search warrant obtained by FOX 5 News, Halderman possessed copies of his then-girlfriend Stephanie’s diary, which detailed her relationship with Letterman.
Birkitt joined Letterman as an intern a year before graduating Wake Forest University in ’97. During her time at CBS she worked both on the Late Show and 48 Hours.
“He’s just fun. And he’s happy, and he’s nice, and he’s extremely generous with us. And he’s just playful. We play catch sometimes in the office, and we all go to screenings together,” Birkitt told the Fort Worth Star Telegram in 2004.
“We eat food together, we sit around and watch TV together and goof on people. And he teases me in real life, too, but I give it back a lot more in real life.”
